FMLT: our multilamellar liposome technology

Fast Multi-Liposome Technology forms multilamellar liposomes at room temperature and atmospheric pressure with Cellike, a plant-lecithin system, instead of synthetic emulsifiers and costly high-pressure equipment.

What is FMLT?

A concentrated liposome, ready to load

StemCello Revitalizing™ products utilize “Cellike”—a natural emulsifying agent composed of a precisely balanced blend of high-purity, plant-derived lecithin and carefully selected oils—in place of synthetic emulsifiers. Cellike enables the rapid formation of liposomes under atmospheric pressure, eliminating the need for expensive, specialized liposome-manufacturing equipment.

FMLT process: water and oil phases emulsified with Cellike to form multiple layered liposomes, with optional high-pressure homogenization
Fig. 1FMLT process: the water phase with hydrophilic compounds and the oil phase with hydrophobic compounds are emulsified with Cellike, a cell membrane-like lamellar structure, to form multiple layered liposomes. High-pressure homogenization is optional.

Cellike functions as a pre-formulated, highly concentrated liposome base that does not contain any active ingredients. Its high concentration allows for the creation of various formulations—ranging from lotions to creams—with little to no need for additional thickening agents. StemCello Revitalizing™ products are manufactured by emulsifying Cellike for a short duration under standard homogenization conditions (3,000 rpm), a process that results in the formation of multilamellar liposomes. Under these typical emulsification conditions, Cellike produces multilamellar liposomes with an average size of approximately 500–1,000 nm.

Based on Korean patent 10-0461458 (2004), multiple-layered liposome

By enabling the creation of liposomes of a desired size using only Cellike—without the need for a high-pressure homogenizer—this approach not only reduces manufacturing costs but has also shown advantages over conventional processes in our formulation work for stabilizing volatile or unstable ingredients, such as retinol. BioSpectrum has termed this technology—which allows for the convenient, room-temperature production of multilamellar liposomes using Cellike—‘FMLT’ (Fast Multi-Liposome Technology).

Skin affinity of FMLT formulations

The same lipid as the cell membrane

FMLT liposomes closely resemble the structure of cell membranes and stratum corneum lipids. Their main component, phosphatidylcholine, is the major phospholipid of cell membranes. They blend naturally with the skin, cause little irritation, and are well suited to delivering active ingredients.

Ingredients are released gradually from multiple membrane layers for a long-lasting skin-care experience.

High moisturization

Water held between membrane layers provides excellent hydration.

Skin affinity

Made of the same components as skin lipids.

Solubilizing effect

Raises the solubility of poorly soluble actives.

Gentle delivery

Delivers ingredients to the skin’s surface layers with minimal irritation.

Barrier support

Replenishes phospholipids to support the skin’s moisture barrier.

Plant origin

Made from plant-derived ingredients.
